Well, I finally bit the bullet, and looked up how to do "frames" on modern-day graphical browsers. I decided I had a good reason - I'd use the window on the right to display all of my graphics, so that the "non-frames" version would also be the "mostly-text" version of my page.
If you know anything about frames, you might know that they're a pain to deal with, as far as keeping the frames and non-frames versions in step with each other. My approach was to incorporate the "main" frame in the "noframes" part of the main page (index.html), and then before I upload to DDB, I make a copy that doesn't have the frameset commands in it (top.html). This has the unfortunate side effect in the case of a big main page, because it essentially loads twice.
So it wasn't the optimal way to do it. But I'll be darned if I'm going to have a snide "You're not using Netsplorer, you archaic fool" message as the welcoming greeting. It hardly seems very welcoming.
(About a year later...) I had my home page set up with frames, using a GeoCities page as an icon showcase, and the same group of icons running along the right edge of tmy hom page. For a while, I had three versions of my page - the two that I had before, one with just icons, and one with lots of text (and now very few graphics) - plus the third frame-using page, for those who wanted the full deluxe graphical experience.
I eventually got fed up with GeoCities and their pop-up gizmos, and tired of my frames pages... and I took my big long page and broke it into sections. This sub-page here used to be part of my main entry page, but that page at 32K was just a bit too big!
