Putnam's Snickerdoodles (cookies) -- 400 F

Snickerdoodles.

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Sift next 4 ingredients together and add to shortening mixture. Chill dough for several hours or overnight. Roll dough into balls the size of walnuts. Combine sugar and cinnamon and roll balls in mixture. Place about 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned, but still soft. (These cookies puff up at first, then flatten out with crinkled tops.)

"These are Jack's favorite cookies." [Lile and Jack D. Putnam, Franktown CO; from "How to feed a Starving Artist Cookbook," Mountain Press Publishing Co., Missoula MT 1983, page 247.]

[August 2010. My wife Lynn likes to add extra cinnamon to the cinnamon sugar mixture. And in our oven, 8 minutes seems to be just about right.]

[July 2017. Chilling the dough overnight seems to dry it out and make it harder to roll into balls.]

[Aug. 2018. Using my purple scoop, I get about four dozen cookies.]

[Feb. 2019. Using my melon baller aka chrome mini scoop, I get 83 cookies. And it takes about 8 minutes to roll out a pan of 30 cookies, so I baked them one pan at a time.]
